So, I am old fashioned when it comes to my writing.
When I am writing first drafts, I do it in two parts. Part one involves hand writing each chapter. After I’ve finished the chapter hand written, what I move on to part two of my process: typing the chapters out.
I also don’t necessarily work in order, which is easier now that I’ve been writing out outlines rather than just a generic idea.
One of the reasons I like this process is because I can get a good flow of words out (even though my hand doesn’t necessarily write as quickly as my mind moves) and then when I go to typing it out I can catch small mistakes and add things that I feel were missing out or take things out that should be gone.
I’ve always enjoyed doing it that way. It’s a relief of sorts, it lets me get out the emotions that build up in my head and bog down my writing while I’m typing.
There are so many distractions on the computer, because I can never seem to want to turn my internet off. If I want to get a lot of writing done, I take just my notebook, a few pens (just in case the ink runs dry) and my charger for my phone and tablet for music and go to Starbucks.
If I take my laptop with me then I get distracted with Facebook, games, Twitter and any number of things that are there to amuse. I will get some writing done, but usually not that much.
My laptop is also what holds ALL-THE-SHOWS.
Granted, when I listen to television shows playing its another way of eavesdropping to see people interacting. But when I’m at Starbucks, mine gives enough material for a life time. There are some crazy happenings there.
So, yeah, I hand write most of my stuff before typing it out because it make me feel like I get more words down. I don’t know if it is just my mind playing games with me or if it really works. But I will continue doing it.
